Red Wine Stain Removal Hacks

Red wine on your wool carpet? Don’t panic — try these quick and effective red wine stain removal tricks before the stain sets!

Spilling red wine on a wool carpet can be stressful, but quick action can make all the difference. Start by blotting up as much wine as possible. Use a clean white cloth — or a wet-dry vacuum if you have one. Next, pour a small amount of cold or sparkling water over the stain to lift the pigment, then blot again until no more colour transfers. While the area is still damp, cover it with salt and let it sit until dry. The salt will absorb the wine and turn pink. Once it’s completely dry, gently vacuum up the salt to reveal a much lighter stain.

For deeper marks, mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, 2 cups of warm water, and ½ teaspoon of glycerin (optional). Dab gently with a clean cloth, alternating with dry blotting until the stain fades. You can also apply a paste made of baking soda and water (4:1 ratio), allow it to dry, then vacuum it up. If the stain is still visible, try a carpet stain remover formulated for red wine and follow the product instructions carefully. If that doesn’t work, it might be time to call in the professionals for a thorough clean and stain removal.
